YUE City is the second-largest commercial complex in Guangzhou, a 3-million-sqft transformation that repurposes a former wholesale footwear market into a vibrant, mixed-use shopping destination. Anchored in the concept of Metamorphosis, the project signals a powerful rebirth—reshaping both the architecture and spirit of the site into a dynamic urban landmark that reflects the city’s evolving rhythms and communal aspirations.
Working within the existing structure, the design reimagines four identical blocks with bold interventions: a butterfly-inspired façade of 30,000 LED-perforated panels, a grand west gateway glowing with media mesh, and sunken plaza entries for intuitive pedestrian flow. Internally, circulation is reorganized into a cross-loop system linking eight immersive atriums, each themed with artistic, natural, or tech elements. At the heart, the Grand Butterfly Plaza anchors the experience with a dome-capped atrium and panoramic LED screen for events. The project redefines retail as a multi-sensory public space celebrating interaction, discovery, and identity.
As part of the core design team, I contributed from concept through design development, collaborating closely with senior principals and consultants. Responsibilities included concept and design proposals, digital modeling, visualization, technical bid packages, and support for construction documentation and coordination.
